Volkswagen Warning Lights & Their Meanings
What is the illuminated symbol on your instrument cluster trying to tell you? The Volkswagen warning lights are color-coded to signal how urgently you need to act while you’re out in Odessa. Red lights indicate an urgent need for attention or service; yellow or amber lights should be addressed promptly but are generally less urgent than red lights; green lights indicate that a feature or system is active and working as intended.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of Volkswagen warning lights and what they mean:
Volkswagen Red Warning Lights
- Car w/ Door(s) Open: At least one door is ajar or not closed properly.
- Car w/ Hood Up: The engine hood is open or not closed properly.
- Key: The ignition is malfunctioning, or the immobilizer is activated.
- Steering Wheel: When lit consistently, it indicates a steering system malfunction. A flashing indicator signals an electronic steering column lock malfunction.
- Seatbelted Passenger: The driver and/or passenger safety belts are not fastened.
- “BRAKE” w/ An Exclamation Mark: The brake system is malfunctioning, or the brake fluid is low.
- Oil Can: The engine oil pressure is too low.
- Battery: The alternator is malfunctioning.
Volkswagen Yellow (Amber) Warning Lights
- Tire w/ An Exclamation Mark: When lit consistently, at least one tire’s air pressure is too low. A flashing indicator signals a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) malfunction.
- Key: The ignition switch or starter button (keyless access) is malfunctioning.
- Gas Pump: The fuel tank is nearly empty.
- Light Bulb w/ An Exclamation Mark: When lit consistently, one or more exterior lights are burned out. A flashing icon indicates a malfunction in the exterior or cornering lights.
- Engine: When lit consistently, an engine control malfunction has occurred. A flashing indicator means an engine misfire has occurred.
- License Plate w/ A Light Bulb: One or more license plate lights have burned out.
- Turtle: The vehicle is operating with limited power in absolute reserve mode.
Volkswagen Green Warning Lights
- Headlamp w/ Wavy Lines: The fog lights are currently on.
- “DRL” Alongside A Headlamp w/ Wavy Lines: The Daytime Running Lights are active.
- Speedometer w/ Arrow: Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Front Assist are switched on and active.
- Steering Wheel w/ Wavy Lines: The steering wheel heater is active.
- Road Lane: Lane Assist is enabled and active.
- Car Going Downhill w/ Speedometer: When lit consistently, Hill Descent Assist is switched on. Flashing indicates that Hill Descent Assist is both enabled and active.
